MUNCH: Tackling Food Waste with Innovative App in Hungary

The issue of food waste is a global concern, with an immense scale of overconsumption and excess leading to significant environmental and social problems. In Hungary, the statistics are staggering: each person discards approximately 65kg of food annually, cumulating in a massive 635,000 tonnes of yearly food waste. Addressing this challenge requires innovative solutions, and the Munch App, a Hungarian start-up initiative, is at the forefront of this battle.

MUNCH App: A Platform for Reducing Food Waste

MUNCH is a dynamic platform that enables restaurants and shops to sell unsold but still high-quality food at substantial discounts (40-60%). The primary goal of the MUNCH App is to significantly reduce food waste and prevent the generation of organic waste. The app presents a straightforward solution to make food management more sustainable from environmental, social, and economic perspectives.

How MUNCH Works

The MUNCH App offers a dual-registration system:

  • Sellers: Restaurants, bakeries, and pastry shops can register as sellers, offering their unsold food items on the platform.
  • Buyers: Individuals can register as buyers, accessing discounted food options, contributing to waste reduction while enjoying savings.

Impressive Results and Impact

MUNCH’s impact since its inception has been notable:

  • Saved Portions: Over 700,000 portions of food have been saved.
  • Reduced Greenhouse Gases: Approximately 1,600+ tons of greenhouse gas emissions have been prevented.
  • Food for Those in Need: More than 11,500 food deliveries have been made to people in need.
  • Economic Savings: Users have saved over 580,000 EUR through the app.
  • Growing Community: Thousands of members have registered on the MUNCH platform.
